3D airfoil product is normally manufactured by CNC milling machine, generally the roughness of the milled surface cannot reach the required tolerance, even using a dedicated 5-axis die-milling machine. Since the aircraft engines such as CFM56 run under high-speed rotation conditions, the surface requirements of the blades are very strict considering the wind resistance coefficient, the precision requirements usually cannot be achieved after general machining. Therefore a special design and dedicated polishing machine with various tooling and measuring tools such as multi-functional inspection gauges, master blade, mid span working gage, guillotine gage, platform gage, shank gage, LE/TE template, optical machine, and with experienced manual polishing crafts, is the solution to achieve the high standard requirement. This technology has been mainly applied to various engine 3D airfoil products and certified by Safran Group.
